LANDLIGHTS Community Choir
Community Guidelines
Welcome to LANDLIGHTS Community Choir! We are a joyful group of adults who enjoy singing together for ourselves, our friends, and the community. We meet only once a week, so it is important to make each 105-minute rehearsal as productive and positive as possible. We ask that you keep the following guidelines* in mind:
Core Values:
-
This Community Choir is a volunteer, social, leisure activity and is meant to be fun for everyone!
-
Everyone has a voice and should be encouraged to sing!
-
The “Community” aspect of our community choir is just as important as the “Choir” part.
Attendance
Attendance is not mandatory, and it is understandable that conflicting schedule demands can pop up. Please keep in mind, however, that singing in a choir is a commitment to yourself, the director, and to the other members of the choir. Your voice is an important part of this choir. Try to make it as often as you can. If you are sick, however, please stay home! You’ll have access to rehearsal recordings and practice tracks so you can stay on top of the music whenever you miss a session.
Rehearsal Time
Please be on time! We start right at 7:30 p.m., but the room opens at 7:00 p.m.! Please leave extra time to park and check in and get settled. Work and traffic can make this difficult, but try to plan ahead! We will always end at 9:15 p.m. (as promptly as possible!), and there will always be a break!
Practicing on Your Own
Try to listen to the songs on your own to become familiar with them. You will also be encouraged to listen to, and practice with, the audio learning and singing files on Dropbox. These will help you practice between rehearsals, making our rehearsal time more productive.
Talking During Rehearsal
Our choir is an amazing community of friends. Friends love to talk and catch up - but please save these discussions for before/after rehearsal and during breaks. Talking during rehearsals is disruptive and can be rude to your fellow singers. It also forces the conductor to either talk over you or wait until you’re quiet, slowing down rehearsal. Please try to save your socializing for the breaks!
Be Positive
Whether you’re an experienced choir member or are doing this for the first time, we’re all at different levels of expertise and it can be a challenge to make it a rewarding experience for all members. Even if certain songs aren't your favorites, they may be someone else’s! Please do not disparage other people’s musical taste. Keep an open mind - sometimes a song you dislike from the original version can become your favorite when sung as a choir! Also, all choral arrangements are created based on the needs and abilities of the group, so please be patient and know we always get there in the end!
Be Supportive
Never shame another singer by pointing out that they are singing something incorrectly. Instead ask the conductor for help on a certain part of the song that may benefit your whole section. For example: “Can I please hear our part in the second verse again?”
Be Inclusive
Our choir is a haven from the divisions and identity politics that separate us in the outside world. Never shame another singer because they do not share your race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, economic class, disability status, education, religion, language, profession, veteran status, political affiliations, or societal views. Our Community Choir seeks to maintain an inclusive environment that welcomes everybody. Any controversial or divisive discussions must be left at the door so we can focus on coming together as a community during our rehearsals.
Eligibility
By participating in our Community Choir, you represent that you are at least 18 years old at the time you sign up for our choir.
